In the show Lombardi we opened with the silhouette of two football players facing off against each other. I created this effect through the use of a cyc light pointed out at the audience.

This was followed by a toplight spotlight on Lombardi. In the script, it was written that Lombardi should show up as a silhouette, but due to his positioning on the thrust stage, a true silhouette would not have worked. I then decided that doing the toplight spot would create a similar feeling that would actually work on the stage. I also like it better than the silhouette would look.

The opening was mentioned in Warren Gerd’s review of the play.
“This production of “Lombardi” includes elements that are distinctive to it. In other words, Tricia Adams and the creative team make it their own – which is what theater is about from production to production.
Evergreen Productions’ interpretation features:
+ Prior to the performance, video highlights of Green Bay Packers games are screened.
+ In the opening moment, a silhouette of players in stop action is created at the rear center of the stage.
+ Throughout the play, game highlights and practice-field footage are shown, sometimes as a backdrop to what’s being said on stage.
+ Scenes in the Lombardi home include a backdrop photo image of an open-plan, large-windowed room with a modern painting on the wall.
+ Popular music of the 1960s is played during scene changes.”
